The Issues

Government exists to serve the people. Too often, we Americans have allowed and even encouraged our leaders to tell us what we want to hear, not what is true.

America should look for solutions based on hope rather than fear. We must act out of a sense of optimism and a positive vision for the world.

As a society we have an obligation to make sure that everybody has an opportunity to succeed, and that means much more than free public high school. We have only ourselves to blame if we have an underclass of people who have given up on competing in the mainstream of our society. We can and should do better.

I welcome and encourage you to send me your thoughts on issues that interest you. I am passionate about creating a better future for our country and believe that the best solutions come from a robust debate, just as our Founding Father’s envisioned.

Iraq
We have to accept that our involvement in the war is over and whatever we do to get out will result in much more pain and misery. I believe that my proposal incorporates both the realities in the region as well as the realities of the American electorate and will result in the least amount of pain. All agree that the solution is political and that all the players in the region - - Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria and even Turkey - - are trying to protect their perceived interests. We can and should hold the withdrawal of our troops up as the ultimate threat to create political consensus. Read more...

America’s Global Standing
I have a strong American identity as a result of living overseas for much of my life. By being abroad, I saw how I was different than people from other countries. America’s values and the American idea are unique in history. It is deplorable that the current Administration has used fear to promote an agenda in conflict with liberty and justice. I promise to work to reverse this un-American agenda.
What do I mean by this? Read more...

Health Care
As a Democrat, I believe that we can reach a consensus on health care for all Americans. We will all need to make some sacrifices but is it reasonable that 47 million Americans don't have health insurance?! I am proud that it is the Democratic candidates who are talking about this chasm in our social safety net and saddened to see the Republican candidates ignore it out of fear that voters don't care enough to accept that there will have to be some sacrifice. The Economy
In recent years American Corporations have posted record profits as they have moved jobs overseas and allowed wages to stagnate for all but the top managers. The average American has been left behind. At the same time the current Administration has plunged our nation into debt by reducing taxes for the rich and pursuing a costly war in Iraq. If we are going to continue to compete in the global marketplace then we must do a better job of preparing for it. Read more...

The Environment
Innovation and Education. Locally, these unique American traits need to be employed to preserve our beautiful Chesapeake Bay and our economy. It's not farms OR the bay, it's farms AND the bay. Farms are a precious resource that feed us and protect the beauty of our countryside. But environmental issues are much more than bay or farm. Read More...
